Why Heat and Humidity Can Make Pain Worse
Pain changes with the seasons—and the way we care for it may need to change too.
By Carlos Carpintero, L.Ac. · In-Power Wellness Center

The surprising pattern
Warm weather does not always mean less pain
Many people assume pain should improve when summer arrives. But after more than two decades of treating pain, I see almost as many people seeking relief in summer as I do in winter.
The difference is often not whether pain appears, but how it feels.
Weather does not affect everyone the same way. What matters is noticing how your own symptoms respond.
Winter pain vs. summer pain

These are common clinical patterns—not rigid rules or a diagnosis for every person.
From the treatment room
A patient whose low back pain returned during a heat wave
40%
reported reduction in pain intensity after two treatments
A longtime patient returned with low back pain that began during a period of very hot weather. At work, she moved between hot areas and other warm areas with strong fans blowing.
There was no visible redness, but the pain worsened with heat, improved with cold, and appeared to involve possible sciatic nerve irritation.
From a TCM perspective, I diagnosed Qi stagnation along the Gallbladder and Urinary Bladder channels.
Electrical stimulation
Electrical stimulation
Cupping
Herbal oil
Every patient responds differently, and no specific outcome can be promised.
Why diagnosis matters
The same pain location can have different root patterns
Two people may both arrive with low back pain, but one may have Cold and stiffness, another may have Dampness and heaviness, and someone else may show signs of Heat, inflammation, nerve irritation, or Qi stagnation.
Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at what makes the pain better or worse, whether it responds to heat or cold, whether it moves, and which channels and internal systems may be involved.
Five ways to care for summer pain
Walk early
Move before heat and humidity peak.
Keep moving
Use gentle walking and mobility.
Use contrast
Alternate comfortable warm and cool water.
Hydrate
Drink regularly in hot conditions.
Watch airflow
Avoid prolonged direct fan or AC exposure.
Common mistakes
What to avoid during a summer flare-up
- Applying heat automatically because it helped in winter
- Becoming completely inactive
- Letting fans or AC blow directly on the painful area
- Spending excessive time in extreme heat
- Becoming dehydrated
Seek urgent medical care for low back or sciatic symptoms with new bowel or bladder changes, saddle-area numbness, or progressive leg weakness.
Individualized support
How treatment may help
The goal is not to use the same formula for every person. Treatment is selected according to the quality of the pain, the channels involved, environmental influences, constitution, and underlying imbalances.
The plan should fit the person—not just the pain location.
Acupuncture
Electrical stimulation
Chinese herbs
Supplements
Topical products
Lifestyle Guidance
Cupping
Massage therapy
A seasonal approach
You do not have to simply endure summer pain
Your body is constantly responding to its environment. That is not a sign that your body has failed. It is a reminder that your needs may change as the seasons change.
At In-Power Wellness Center, the goal is not simply to chase a symptom. It is to help you understand your body more clearly and move through the seasons of life with greater comfort, resilience, and presence.
Ready to better understand your pain?
If heat and humidity are aggravating your back pain, joint pain, inflammation, or sciatic symptoms, schedule an individualized evaluation.

The Hidden Stress of Summer: Why More Sunshine Doesn’t Always Mean More Calm
Summer is often associated with relaxation, vacations, and more time spent enjoying life. The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and many of us look forward to spending more time with family and friends.
Yet every year around this time, I notice something interesting in the clinic.
Many patients begin experiencing increased anxiety, restless sleep, nervous system sensitivity, and even flare-ups of inflammation and pain. At first glance, this can seem confusing. After all, summer is supposed to be the season when we feel our best.
Summer isn’t stressful because you’re doing something wrong. It’s stressful because even positive changes require adaptation.
During the summer months, our routines often change significantly. Kids are home from school. Travel increases. Family gatherings become more frequent. Social calendars fill up. We stay up later and often indulge a little more than we normally would.
While these experiences can be joyful and meaningful, they still place additional demands on the body and nervous system.
The TCM Perspective: Summer, Fire, and the Shen
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, summer corresponds to the Fire Element. The Fire Element governs not only the physical Heart but also the Shen—the aspect of ourselves connected to awareness, emotional balance, sleep, and mental activity.
In modern life, many of us already live with a significant amount of mental stimulation. When summer adds more activity, less sleep, increased social obligations, and fewer opportunities for rest, the Fire Element can become imbalanced.
This may show up as:
- Increased anxiety or nervousness
- Restless or disrupted sleep
- Racing thoughts
- Feeling emotionally reactive
- Difficulty relaxing
- Feeling “wired but tired”
For some individuals, heat and humidity may also contribute to increased inflammation, joint discomfort, or aggravation of existing pain conditions.
The good news is that these patterns are often highly responsive to treatment and lifestyle adjustments.
Simple Ways to Support Your Nervous System This Summer
Spend time in nature.
Nature helps us slow down, reconnect with our bodies, and discharge excess mental activity.
Practice meditation near water.
Whether it’s a fountain, a creek, a lake, or even the sound of running water, water has a naturally calming effect on the nervous system and can help settle an overactive mind.
Reduce stimulants and alcohol.
Coffee, alcohol, and other stimulants can further aggravate an already overstimulated nervous system during the summer months.
Stay hydrated.
Proper hydration supports circulation, energy, and overall balance during warmer weather.
Schedule an acupuncture tune-up.
Sometimes the symptoms we experience are rooted in deeper imbalances that are not immediately obvious. Acupuncture helps identify and address the underlying patterns contributing to stress, sleep disruption, anxiety, and inflammation.
Herbal Support: Calm Shen
One of the formulas we frequently recommend during the summer months is our Calm Shen herbal blend.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Shen refers to the aspect of ourselves connected to emotional balance, mental clarity, awareness, and restful sleep. When the Shen becomes unsettled, people may experience anxiety, frustration, restless sleep, racing thoughts, or a feeling of being emotionally overwhelmed.
Calm Shen was designed to help balance the Fire Element by nourishing Heart Yin, Blood, and Qi while gently soothing Liver Qi.
Many patients report feeling more centered, sleeping more deeply, and finding it easier to move through life’s challenges without becoming overwhelmed by them.
Rather than suppressing emotions, the formula helps create the internal balance needed to process experiences more naturally and respond to stress with greater resilience and ease.
Summer is meant to be enjoyed.
By supporting your nervous system, honoring your need for rest, and staying connected to your body’s signals, you can experience the vitality and joy of the season while remaining grounded, balanced, and present.

The 4 TCM Patterns Behind Your Tension, Fatigue, and Restless Sleep
This post helps you understand the stress and pain (not personal failure), and guides you to discover your dominant TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)-inspired pattern with a gentle 60-second quiz—so you can get personalized next-steps.

If you’ve been feeling “off” lately…Not sick exactly. But not well, either...
Maybe your shoulders live up by your ears. Your mind keeps running even when your body is exhausted, or you wake up tired, foggy, and somehow already behind.
And if you’ve tried the usual advice—more water, better sleep hygiene, magnesium, stretching, fewer screens—but you still don’t feel like yourself…I want you to hear this:
You’re not broken.
And your symptoms aren’t random.
They’re communication.
Why Stress and Pain Aren’t Random (They Follow Patterns)
Most people are taught to think about health like this: Symptom → fix. But that approach can turn your body into a list of problems to manage.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a different lens—one that I’ve found to be incredibly grounding. In TCM, we pay attention to patterns. Not as labels. Not as diagnoses. More like: the way your body responds when it’s under pressure.
Your nervous system sets the tone. When it’s overloaded, the body spends energy on survival… not repair. And that’s why my approach is never about “me healing you.” It’s about helping your body access what it already knows how to do.
Traditional Chinese Medicine lens
- Patterns over labels
- Qi (usable energy + flow)
- Shen (heart-mind steadiness)
Nervous system lens
- Tone + regulation
- Less “alarm,” more repair
- Clarity replaces overwhelm
Stress Load:
work • parenting • Pressure
Nervous System Tone:
bracing • alert • low-power
Where it Shows up:
sleep • fog • tension • depletion
The 4 Common Stress and Pain Patterns I See Most Often
You may recognize yourself in more than one pattern. That’s normal. Usually one pattern is “dominant”—the one your body returns to when life gets intense.

1) The Sleepless Worrier
You’re tired… but your mind won’t turn off.

- Light/broken sleep or waking around the same time nightly
- Racing thoughts (especially at night)
- Wired but tired
- Sensitivity to noise, stress, or emotional intensity
- Chest or mind feels “busy”
- You’re carrying too much in your head
- You’re trying to stay on top of everything
- You crave calm, but can’t access it
2) The Heavy and Foggy Mind
Not anxious—just… heavy.

- Brain fog, sluggishness, difficulty concentrating
- Heaviness/puffy feeling, low-grade fatigue
- Bloating or feeling “full” easily
- Energy dips after meals
- Cravings (especially sugar/comfort foods)
- You’re behind before you begin
- You want to care… but don’t have bandwidth
- Mentally “muddy,” not clear
3) The Tense and Stressed Neck
Braced, clenched, carrying pressure.

- Neck/shoulder tension, tight traps
- Jaw clenching, teeth grinding
- Headaches or tension behind the eyes
- Sighing, shallow breathing, feeling “braced”
- Irritability, frustration, snapping faster than you want to
- You’re holding everything together
- You’re trying to keep control
- You’re doing a lot… and you’re tired of it
4) The Tired, Achy Back
Deep depletion—like rest helps, but not enough.

- Low back fatigue or achiness
- Deep exhaustion, especially in the morning
- Heaviness in the legs
- Feeling cold, slow, or low-powered
- Burnout edges… where everything feels like effort
Want your Dominant Pattern Confirmed?
Why Self-Awareness Changes Everything
When you don’t understand your pattern, it’s easy to blame yourself: “I should be handling this better.” “I’m doing the right things—why isn’t it working?” But your body isn’t asking for discipline. It’s asking for support.
The moment you can name what’s happening—without diagnosing it—you stop fighting yourself. You go from overwhelmed to clarity, and clarity creates calm.
From self-blame to support
“I should be handling this better.”
“Why isn’t this working?”
“Maybe I’m not disciplined enough.”
Reframe: Your body isn’t asking for discipline — it’s asking for support.
A Quick Client Story

Norma Hanes
A parent. A professional. A caretaker.
“I don’t even know what’s wrong anymore. I’m tired, but I can’t sleep. My neck is always tight. And my mind feels like it’s running a hundred tabs.”
Once we started looking at their pattern, everything got simpler. Instead of chasing symptoms, we focused on regulation—reducing the internal “alarm,” helping the body shift out of bracing, and supporting clearer energy so they could think and rest again.
“I feel like I’m back in my body. I’m not fighting myself anymore.”

FAQ
That’s completely normal. Most people don’t fit into one perfect category—especially when stress has been building over time. You might recognize pieces of two (or even three) patterns depending on what season of life you’re in, how much you’re carrying right now, and whether your system is more “wired,” “heavy,” or “depleted” lately. The quiz simply helps you identify your dominant pattern—the one your body tends to return to most often. From there, the recommendations give you a clear starting point so you’re not trying to do everything at once. Think of it as direction… not a label.
Right after you finish the quiz, you’ll see your dominant pattern and a clear explanation of what that pattern often feels like—physically and emotionally. Then, over the next few days, you’ll receive a short series of follow-up emails with personalized insights based on your result, simple practical recommendations to support your nervous system and energy flow, and gentle next steps you can actually use (without trying to overhaul your whole life). No pressure, and no overwhelm—just guidance that helps you work with your body instead of guessing.
The quiz takes about 60 seconds. And most people walk away with something that’s hard to find when you’re stressed: clarity. You’ll get your result right away, and then you’ll receive follow-up emails with simple, supportive recommendations based on your dominant pattern—so you can start making changes that actually match your body, instead of trying everything at once.
Yes. If you’re local to the Bartlett area or the Chicago suburbs, you can work with us in person at In-Power Wellness. Closing Invitation
If your body has been sending signals—through sleep, tension, fog, fatigue, or pain—you don’t need to ignore it or push harder.
You don’t want gimmicks. You don’t want fear-based marketing. You don’t want someone promising to “fix” you. Neither do I. Your body has an inner healing intelligence. My role is to help activate and support that—so your system can return to balance.
No urgency. Just a doorway back to yourself.
